Podtacular Episode 182: Around The Ring – Left 4 Dead: No Mercy Campaign
for the week of March 8th, 2009

(Hosts: Lancelot, Dust Storm & TheCrazyCommie)

Scarface_Spartan

Hey its Scarface_Spartan again..

and this time, I’m gonna give you tips on how to survive on the ending
level of No Mercy

1. Don’t go for that turret. Because if you do, and if you teamates are
useless, the zombies will still be able to reach you (since they also come
from the sides)

2. Stay on the upper parts.

3. Get auto shotguns to handle the tanks (3-4 of them appeared when I am
playing)

4. Keep moving around.

5. Stay in open spaced parts of the map.

6. Use your molotovs and pipe bombs wisely.

7. When your rescue (helicopter) arrives, GET TO THE CHOPPA!!

This is a really short submission..

I like to give a shout out to my Philippine Counter Strike clan buddies,
namely, Jstn032, Up_Tem_Po, laazyMUSHY, Cypher, Secret Hero, Thok,
StripperJoust!, SniperElite, ButtsecksUH and konoreinokazei.

Also, I wanna give a BIG apology to the man, Lancelot, for me misspelling
his name while chatting over Steam :P

This is Scarface_Spartan logging off..

D-man

Hey its D-man here submitting tips for Left for Dead. If you are a survivor
on the No Mercy Campaign their is a sort to the bottom of the apartment.
Just look behind you and jump from the roof to a air conditioner. It will
take some damage, but it beats going through the apartment. In the Sewer
scene, instead of using the high-lift to get into the warehouse head
towards the lock door and start hitting it. It will break and not alert the
horde. In the final scene of the No Mercy campaign, their is a room block
off by a door that can only be opened by the zombies. As soon as you get to
the roof of the hospital, make sure you avoid any zombies on the roof and
climb the ladder towards the right. Watch as the zombies climb on the side
of the door. The door will be and you will have a nice spot to try to get
the Untouchables achievement.
As a zombies in versus mode the best way to win is to work together and
to take any survivors down that are falling behind. A good combination is
for a smoker to hold a survivor while a hunter waits for another survivor
to rescue him or her. If you are a boomer make sure to get close to vomit
on the survivors. As a tank make sure you corner the survivors so they will
be trapped. Thanks Podtacular for reading this and keep up the good work.

moose0030

Hey Podtacular this moose0030. My story started in the NO Mercy Sewers
Level. Me, oya1985, and Toefuzz were playing on expert. We were barely
surving as is. When suddenly Toefuzz and oya1985 got killed by the tank. While the tank was munching on my friends in the sewers I decided to stay
uptop and run away. I then saw my friends in a closet up some staris. I
slowly moved towards them with only one health. Every step I took I could
hear the tank coming clser. I was inching closer and closer and when I saw
the door I saw the tank behind me. I opened the door as I got killed by
the tank. Toefuzz was also thrown down by the tank. Oya on the other hand
stood for a second as he had just seen his friends get brutally murdered. He started to shoot and run but it as too late. He died. During this whole
race we were bursting out laughing. This was truely amazing. It was a
once in a lifetime moment. It seemed straight out from a horror movie.

Thanks for reading my story.
Keep on fraggin the people who set off the hoarde by shooting the red car
when you are standing right in the middle of the street.

EliteSpartan182

Hey ther podtac its EliteSpartan182 again here is a helpful tip while in
the Subway in No Mercy. In the subway in versus you should get the smoker
to climb up the wall (when you get outside the safe room turn left and
climb up the wall with all of the steel wall units) then get the boomer up
there. After that you should have 2 hunters left you should hide them under
the safe room if they try to make a run for it they won’t get far before
the hunter pounces like a panther and its prey. Then get the boomer up and
throw up all over them.then use the smoker to hang him off the side while
the zombies are ravaging his brains out.(i done this on xbox live with my 3
friends and they didnt get past the first stairs or ladders) and that shold
be an easy way to score points and win the match. Good luck with the
podcast and look 4ward to sumitting for the next show. Keep on fraggin
DustStorm for calling ninjaman and I childish. >:-0 (very angry suprised
face.)

blackheli

hey guys, it blackheli, new member of the site, sending some tips for the
L4D campaign level: No Mercey

1. allways stick together, seperating from your group will allmost allways
result in death

2. search every room for ammo, guns, pills, health kits, etc.

3. when being attack by the hord it allways helps to back your self into a
corner and allternate between the left trigger (shove) and Y (switch
weapons) If you do this you dont have to wait for your character to finish
his swing, you can just do if over and over so the zombies won’t even get a
chance to dammage you.

4. allways keep a good ear out for witches, turn your flashlight off as
soon as you hear them. if possible, try to just get around the witches
without desturbing them, if they are in your path, or in a position your
going to need to defend your self from the horde, your going to have to
kill them. i find the best way to do this is to grab a molotove or a gas
tank. if you have the gas tank just throw it at the witch, it shouldn’t
wake her up, once you have done that back as far away as you can and shoot
the gas tank, then start running. if you have a molotove its the same idea,
bake away and toss it.
and those are my tips for L4D. Keep on Fragin trucks, and annoying parents
at soccer games that wont stop screeming their heads off, and dont even
know the rules.

Outlawx13

Hey, I own Left 4 Dead on the PC and i play it avidly and proudly place it
in my top 5 multi-player collection. No Mercy is usually the campaign that
most beginners play first and truly shows all of the features in Left 4
Dead and (at least to me) does not seem to get old. After playing it a few
times, i realized that almost any tactic that you can think of can be
implemented in No Mercy. Anyway, i was playing online one day, a random
game as none of my usual friends were on, and i was carrying a propane tank
on the level right before the finale. we were walking along the area near
the edge by some wood….stuff when we heard the sound that most players
have come to know and fear, the Tank music. As the tank approached, we
realized that it had spawned a ways in front of us and was getting
dangerously close (the ground was shaking like mad). we backed up a bit,
and i had a sudden idea…i had seen propane tanks knock tanks around a bit
(not killing them outright) and they seemed to have an effect similar to
meleeing a boomer (where he stumbles a bit). I decided to put the propane
tank right by some sort of wooden doorway thing, apparently left over from
the construction site of that part of the hospital (if you have played the
entire No Mercy campaign, you should kind of know what im talking about)
and about 5-7 feet from the edge (which drops off, don’t fall of your
you’ll find yourself on a trip to the bottom of the hospital). As the tank
went through that little wooden doorway thing, i shot the tank which made
him stumble to the side….and right over the edge, a flawless tank victory
and one of my favorite moments playing.
Playing No Mercy can be a fun and rewarding experience, but don’t expect
to be finishing it on expert without some serious team dynamics. The first
level is incredibly short and you should make sure not to sustain too much
damage, you gonna need to save those pills and health packs for later on. Due to all of the high areas in this map, that survivors cannot reach, you
should all be watching for hunters and smokers, as they can put some
serious hurt on you here, i don’t know about you but i don’t enjoy being
strung up on the side of an apartment building, only to be pounce and
ripped to shreds just because i was left behind by my team. play
conservatively, and don’t worry about ammo, either go slow and kill every
zombie, making sure to minimize health loss, or just make a dash for it and
hope for the best. I have found that dashing ahead does NOT always work
(duh) and is NOT worth the risk of someone being caught in a boomer horde
without help (getting down the stairs to the safe room can be a terror with
a horde on your heels). Going through slow, and being aware of your
teammates status is key here because, as i have said before, a smoker and
hunter can easily screw things up.

the second level, the subways, is not very boss friendly due to the small,
confined spaces which force the team to be close together, making hunter
pounces a non-issue if your buddy next to you can punt him off almost as
soon as he hits you. the same goes for smokers, your teammates should
notice and free you before you take any damage. WATCH OUT FOR TANKS, these
small spaces can make it VERY hard to backpedal without hitting an
obstacle, and you can find yourself trapped in a corner before you know it,
easy pray. the boomer can be dangerous in a few areas, again due to the
confined spaces, but all of the corners reduce the damage you take from the
resulting horde as long as you corner melee or just sit in the middle while
your buddies help clear the zombies out for you. this level does
eventually go out into an open area so watch out, the Director seems to
enjoy springing a tank when you near this area, and its hard to climb that
ladder when he is hitting you…duh.
The third level is the longest in the campaign, and thus is the hardest on
the survivors, THIS IS WHAT YOU’VE BEEN SAVING YOU PILLS FOR. the first
area alternates between apartment alleys and a wide open area. when you
trigger the horde with the life to get onto the roof, i suggest that you
either ALL get on the life or, a better choice, find a nice cozy corner to
use to deal with the horde, there is also a good room that you can use by
climbing a dumpster, but you have to run back to it a little ways, giving a
smoker a chance to mess things up. while running on that metal roof after
the life, watch out for a smoker attack, unless you want to fall, take
damage, wait for your buddies to shoot down to free you and climb back up
the lift, usually while dealing with horde. use the gas station to your
advantage to take out a chunk of the horde before they even reach you, but
wait for the maximum kill count before hitting it, I’ve seen its explosive
power wasted many times. when you get to the first drop down location
(right after the lift and the roof) make sure you drop down altogether,
never leave someone up there for a hunter to pounce, because they are dead
meat unless you get down fast enough, which is tough due to all the zombies
in your way. the next part is generic, try to get through it as it is a
prime tank location, giving it a nice advantage with all the places you can
get stuck backing into. once you get to the second drop down location
(into the sewers) make sure to drop down all together again. the sewer
section (the level is named after this part) is relatively easy for the
experienced team to deal with, it is easy to spot boss zombies, and there
are long areas to escape tanks. be careful climbing up the ladder, watch
out for hunters and smokers as you do NOT want to fall down the ladder, the
damage mounts. after climbing up its a short walk to the safe house.

the fourth level can be relatively lengthy, but i find it the most fun. you want to get through the first section quickly and get to the elevator
soon, but at the same time try to get rid of as many zombies as possible to
lower the count during the horde. before calling the elevator, decide on a
location to stay during the horde, i recommend the room directly down the
hall from the elevator, it is quite protected and supports easy defense
using Molotovs, once the elevator reaches the bottom, wait for the horde to
finish and GET TO THAT DOOR AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, you do NOT want a smoker
roping you to slow you down, so get on together and try to stay out of
sight, even in the elevator. a smart human player (in versus) can rope you
at the exact right time and trap you at the bottom. once you reach the
top, begin your way to the safe house, make sure to not fall off the
edge!!! use the edge to your advantage by meleeing zombies off of it,
including boss zombies (nothing is more satisfying then hitting a pouncing
hunter right off the edge and into oblivion). this can be an easy area to
get separated in due to all of the leftover construction stuff, which
translates into a Tank killing ground if your not careful, you don’t want
to be punched off the edge. try to finish that area quickly, but watch
your damage, the finale is coming up.

ok, so the last level is the finale. the first part is basically a
staircase, a long tunnel, 2 ladders and the finale arena. get down that
hallway quickly, but scout the rooms for pills (don’t take too long) and
watch for smokers, boomers and hunters at the top of the ladders, they
enjoy grabbing the first guy up.
plan what you are going to do before you start the helicopter, i suggest
hanging out on top in a group during the horde and using you pipe bombs
effectively, but MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COCKTAILS, during the tanks, spread out
a bit, but not too much, and assign one person to chuck the cocktail, then
run like hell while shooting. you shouldn’t have to worry about common
infected during the tank parts, but don’t be caught off guard by a smoker
or a hunter, that can spell death. also, do NOT stray to close to the
edge, it is all to easy for the tank to punch you off. watch your health,
heal in between the tides and make sure to be watching each others back for
boss infected, when the copter gets there, run for it, but don’t let a boss
get you. use the rest of your nades to draw common infected away and hope
for the best.

Well, that’s the end of my little impromptu guide type thing, its geared
towards versus play and is not meant for someone who wants to get perfect
scores, this is just for the struggling team, these tactics helped me and i
hope they help some of you out there. this is just a general tips thing,
not very detailed at all, i suggest simply googleing “[insert campaign
here] expert guide” and you will find some good stuff.

btw, im always looking for more people to play online with, i play on
steam under the user Outlawx13 and im always looking for a good Left 4 Dead
match, and some TF2 on the side, of course.\

Hey Podtacular, I’m just back from a school trip to Rome! I saw this on the
front page and said to myself “Self” says I “Why don’t I submit something
for it”. Here’s my story from L4D with all the gory details. We were
playing No Mercy Versus mode on the first level, when I heard the tank
music, I panicked and so did everyone else and we all threw our pipe bombs
and molotovs.( Whoops) We made it to the street right beside the burning
oil tanker when we saw him. He was team killing hunters and smokers with a
boomer, so we made a runner to the safe house, we were about to get in when
I saw Bill get smacked in the face by a rock, and was pushed straight
across the street, I kept on running and got hit by a car and incapped, the
car was covering the entrance to the safe room and the alarm went off, I
was behind the car and almost in the safe room, so I was completely
helpless, all I could hear was my teammates screaming and dying, while the
horde tried to get me. :[ Guess what, we didn’t win. Keep on fraggin’
rotten pineapples.

Naepa34

Hey podtacular, I’ve been a listener for a while, and decided to submit
something. My story is that I joined a game that was already in the finale
of no mercy, and was having trouble. I think the whole group died about six
times, making us go back over and over. Over the course of the attempts,
everyone but me left and was replaced by a new player. On one occasion, I
was the only one left, being chased by a flaming tank, and low on health.
Needless to say, I dies, resulting in yet another restart. We eventually
got through, but I died on the final try. Overall, from all of the
restarts, I killed over 900 zombies. My tip is that to the left and right
of the second floor of the room on the rooftop with the radio, there are
stashes or random supplies. They really come in handy if you get
overwhelmed. Also, avoid the tank when reat the edge of the building. Thats
all. Keep on fragging trucks.
