Turok

Platform PlayStation 3 | Publisher Touchstone

Turok is back in the game with a new developer and publisher trying a reboot to the series as the protagonist’s name and race is the only connection with the previous installments. While it’s a competent end product, it fails to impress or be anything other than a rental in comparison to the other FPS juggernauts already available. Find out why after the jump.

Gameplay - 5

Trying to rekindle the magic of the original N64 Turok, this game takes place almost completely in a jungle environment filled with a multitude of various dinosaurs and rounded out with typical FPS factories and generic armored soldiers which wears thin halfway through the game as the level design and enemy AI is painfully average. Dinosaurs simply charge and run away while the soldiers stand/strafe and shoot.

To compensate for the average AI the game’s adversaries tend to knock off a bit too much damage along with the enemy soldier possessing super-human accuracy. This results in uneven pacing from replaying too many sections over and over as death is commonplace even on the default difficulty.

Turok does feature an optional stealth approach to combat to quietly take out enemies with a bow or knife but this never works as well as intended because there is absolutely no feedback to the stealth system aside from getting attacked after being seen. This wouldn’t necessarily be an issue if not for the enemy placement which hinders the stealth feature as there are just too many enemies too close together to accomplish anything but a single stealth kill before being spotted.

Guns, specifically outrageously designed guns have always been a hallmark of the series. Even the bad Turok games had cool guns but they’ve all been sadly left behind as this one only features FPS standards like the shotgun, machine gun, knife, etc with a few exceptions that fail to impress nearly as much as the previous games have.

Visuals - 6

The game’s look is on par with its average gameplay. Powered by Unreal Engine 3, the game makes good use of lighting and particle effects and while uninspired, the gun modeling looks and animates well.

Unfortunately the outdoor environments (where most the game takes place) doesn’t hold up as well. The foliage scattered throughout the environment is impressive initially until gamers move through it and realize that the grass rotates with the player which wouldn’t be all that bad if not for the fact that the game predominately takes place in environments where this gets noticed again and again.

Dinosaurs however are modeled rather well and animate very fluidly but this is offset by bland character models for the humans that seem out of place in comparison. Human enemies and allies have a hazy look to them as if the developers forgot to include high resolution effects on the models.

Sound - 7

As out of place as it seems in an FPS, Turok’s best feature is the sound, specifically the voice work which is both well written and acted. From the grass rustling to the roar of the dinosaurs the sound design in Turok is excellent.

Because the focus of the game’s sound is in its creatures and environments, little was paid to music. For the most part this works but in quite a few encounters having a more fleshed out musical score would’ve led to a much more immersive experience.

Longevity - 6 (Slightly above average (No campaign replay value, multiplayer isn’t that exciting but it’s still a plus))

In addition to the lackluster single player showing from a technical and visual standpoint, Turok also suffers from zero replay value. Aside from going back through the campaign on a harder difficulty there is no other incentive enticing players to revisit it.

Because of this Turok needed to include a top notch multiplayer experience to justify a purchase instead of a rental. Unfortunately it fails in this regard.

Unlike the campaign, the multiplayer doesn’t suffer from some of the single player shortcomings (slowdown, annoying checkpoints) but it’s still a fairly standard affair with typical FPS play-sets and variants; the only difference being dinosaurs who attack all players which doesn’t affect gameplay all that much. A stock multiplayer experience could have been acceptable had Turok been released earlier this generation but it simply can’t compete with the current big FPS’ and only a month after its release it’s already evident as finding matches takes a long time because the game’s online population pales in comparison to other games.

Learning Curve - 6 (Slightly above average (acceptable controls, bad difficulty design))

Since Turok is a standard “run and gun” affair its learning curve is simple and quick. Aside from a slightly different button layout from other FPS’ (which is easily alleviated through pop up icons), players will get accustomed to it fairly quickly. If only the difficulty was tuned in a similar fashion.

As stated, the game seems too hard on numerous occasions and is compounded more so because of the developer’s poor job at checkpoint management, forcing the player to slog back through medium-length stretches of the game after dying.

Turok isn’t a bad game, just a slightly above average game during a time when players have 2 great FPS’ to choose from already. In spite of the game’s outcome, it gives gamers hope that a franchise that many people have long written off turned out so decently under a new developer. Bottom line: rent Turok but keep an eye out for the sequel.

Overall Score - 6.0

Yea I played the demo, and I

Yea I played the demo, and I thought it looked pretty good, and played okay. But a big problem I noticed was how freaking hard it was. There was a stealth section in the demo, and I only managed to kill about 4 guys until I was noticed, and I about that same time I kept getting swarmed, so I kept dying over and over. The dual wielding was cool, but the way you have to press buttons to dual wield the right combination of weapons is kinda confusing. I kept wanting to pick up the SMG with the left had, and Shotgun with the right, and after about 10 tries I finally got it. It was just not as user friendly as I'd like, and trust me it got annoying quick. I did like how they used the Resident Evil style cinematic dinosaur kills with the knife, hands, etc. It made it seem pretty intense. I thought about renting it, but I'm glad I didn't. It really stinks too b/c I was kinda hoping this game would be good....but you can't win em' all. Great review!

WHAT!!!!!!! A 6!!!!!!!!! jk.

WHAT!!!!!!! A 6!!!!!!!!! jk. turok is a great game. if you know how to play. I personally can get through an entire level using just stealth. and I think you got the graphics part mixed up. the outdoors are amazing but inside, meh. and another thing is the AI. dinos aren't the smartest, but the regular baddies are amazing. they are like F.E.A.R. AI. and for the accuracy, you have to remember that they are Wolf Pack. which is the best AWOL military ever, with amazing training. and another thing about stealth is that you will only get caught if the other bad guys see a dead body. before going on a stealth rampage, your supposed to scout the surroundings, watch certain patrol routs etc. and as for multiplayer. come on. it is amazing. even better if you are playing with friends. and as for finding a game, yes it may take awhile, but thats just because not many people bought it because of the number of bad turok games. im not saying your wrong but you overlooked some stuff. this game should at least get a 7 if not better

at least for the 360 version. cuz apparently this is based on PS3

After playing FPS' like the

After playing FPS' like the Halo/Half-life series the AI in this game does show flaws, especially w/ the soldiers. You can argue that the soldiers are elite and thus can shoot well but that does not equate to good AI.

Sharpshooting enemies are often used in FPS' to hide subpar AI. IMO, that's a fault in the AI and directly, negatively affects the game's fun factor. In the Halo games grunts can aim that well but the AI's various reactions to the character imbue the randomness associated w/ thinking beings.

For the stealth elements, maybe I'm just not good enough to be successful in it but it shouldn't be as hard as it is in the default setting. Hell, I'm no spring chicken when it comes to FPS (I've played the majority of the genres offerings across various platforms since Quake 3 on the PC). I've beat every Halo game by myself on Legendary yet I can't do more than a few stealth kills in a row in Turok on the default setting?! To me it's not a matter of 'playing it wrong' but bad game design in enemy placement, feedback, and difficulty.

Multiplayer, even w/ it's standard showing, is the sole reason I didn't give this game a 5. It is a plus and is a better element than the campaign but it's still a standard affair. Even w/ the dino addition it falls far short to Halo 3, CoD 4, UT 3, and even Resistance in every multiplayer category and quoting you,"thats just because not many people bought it" yes I agree but for multiplayer that is a necessity for any multiplayer game which further hurts the game's score and is the reason why I waited a month to finish this review. I wanted to see how the online population stood up because for me a review is to justify whether or not a game is worth the money and worth recommending to people.

If I did a 360 review I'd admit the score would probably be better because of a bigger community and better controller for the FPS genre; in addition to better game performance. I'd say (from what I've read online about the 360 version but not personal experience so that this w/ a grain of salt) a 7 could be possible for the Xbox version but one would have to also realize that FPS competition on the 360 is higher than the PS3 so in comparison it might still get a 6.

I appreciate the feedback and it's not like I'm trashing the game unfairly but when a game comes out in a genre that already has a few mega quality games and a decent amount of good quality games already vying between each other for a person's money, Turok does fall short. In fact, when taking that into account it's actually impressive that the game is above average.

Great way to stand firm with

Great way to stand firm with your score Shorap....that took guts. I'm glad you reviewed it for PS3, b/c it gives us 360 owners a better perspective of how bad PS3 sucks in comparison to the 360. Now all I need is an Army of Two review....b/c I want to buy it, however I'm not sure that I'm willing to waste $60 on it...maybe a few months down the road. Or just a rent...

That had to be the most fanboy statement I have ever heard.

The PS3 does not suck at all. It is just as good as the 360 in technical terms.

Just because a game is bad on the PS3 does not mean the same game is somehow amazing on the 360. Turok has gotten this score on both platforms from many sites.

Dang... this game was a huge

Dang... this game was a huge letdown. I thought it was gonna be great... the graphics (in my opinion) sucked, and trying to dual weild the weapons you actually WANTED to duel wield was nearly impossible. I mean, I played the demo... but it just seemed like an average game that wouldn't cause any excitement. I can't really imagine thousands of people saying "Dang I can't wait to finish the story mode on Turok tonight".
and if they were saying that they just wanted to get it over with... lol
i mean whatever, maybe I should have played the real game and not the demo.

Both systems are worthwhile

Both systems are worthwhile of a purchase. One console may do a genre better than the other but both are worth owning if possible.

Getting off my soapbox, I'm glad you all posted your thoughts on the matter. I really do hope Touchstone comes back with a sequel that addressed this game's shortcomings and restores the Turok name back to the quality that was seen in the first two games.

sigh... on every forum I go

sigh... on every forum I go to, there is at least two people bangin' on "Turok." you haave to remember that this is their first game... If you notice, Call of Duty "4" and Halo "3" are alot better because they've had "experience"... I think the game should have either a 6.5 or 7, and what if there's no aim assist? Pro's don't need 'em! I rampaged on Turok so hard that in one week I had played through the regular difficulty and the Inhuman difficulty (YAY!!! GAMERSCORE...). I do admit that there are various thing wrong with the game, but remember, all pro's can bypass these tiny hiderances. So "Forgive and Forget!"

P.S. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Peace...

Turok Evolution

hmmm yeah definitely the first Turok game. /sarcasm

And even if it was the first Turok game just because it is a "first" doesn't mean you cut the game any slack.

The purpose of reviews is to say how the game is for what it is. Factors such as developer experience, budget, dev time, etc do not work as lifelines. If a game is good we say its good, or a game is bad we say its bad. If a game is just an average shooter (as this was) then we say its an average shooter (remember a 5 is considered as average so 6 is slightly above average).

ScrawnyPaleMan's picture

isn't this Turok game the

isn't this Turok game the first by this publisher

shorap's picture

While I understand that this

While I understand that this game is this particular dev's first game that shouldn't and won't influence anyone's review of any game. I also did mention at the bottom of my review that while this game is slightly above average there is a lot of potential for future installments turning out great which is why I wrote,"keep an eye out for the sequel".

Also while "pros" may not need aim assist reviews aren't made to cater soley to them. Reviews are intended for the general audience and when a game's normal difficulty is a bit too hard for a FPS veteran like me it doesn't bode well for the general audience.
