Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Platform Xbox 360 | Publisher Activision

The Call of Duty brand has existed for some time and was created by a company known as Infinity Ward. The first three Call of Duty games were based on the epic battles of World War II. However gamers soon began to go grow tired of that genre when many games decided to follow the ways of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor (another popular WW II franchise). For the fourth game, Infinity ward decided to make a change and chose a very wise option. That option was modern warfare. Although the story in Call of Duty 4 isn’t based on real events, its still uses the same weapons and does have a similar storyline to the wars and situations that are currently going on.

Gameplay - 9

The gameplay in Call of Duty 4 has changed somewhat from the previous Call of Duty games but it still feels like the same experience but with a refreshing twist. This game is set in modern times so you will be using a lot of semi-automatic guns and ducking and finding cover is essential. Stealth is also important at times but isn’t always required. However, don’t mistake this game for a slow-paced shooter. There is a lot of intense action to be found within.

Campaign:
The campaign in Call of Duty 4 is very well done. The introduction sequence was amazing and the ending is fairly good as well. The campaign removes most of your HUD when you don't need it, giving it a more realistic feel. Call of Duty 4 is fairly easy on Recruit difficulty (as it should be) but on Veteran it is by far one of the most challenging shooters I’ve played. You get to experience a variety of different objectives and missions. One mission makes you go on a AC-130 gunship and take out tangos from the air while you see everything through heat vision. Other times you might have to play a lot more stealthily and letting the enemy know your location will lead to a very difficult game. Sometimes you will receive a lot of backup so you can go in, kill, wait for your backup and kill some more. Other times you will be outnumbered and the game will become much more strategic. This is a very realistic and cinematic game and really makes you feel as if you are in the story.

Multiplayer:
Call of Duty 4 has an amazing matchmaking system. It has many different and unique game types such as Headquarters. In Headquarters, the two teams fight for control of moving objectives. However, the team that is in control of an objective cannot respawn. There are also typical game types such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy (similar to Halo 3's assault) all make up the playlists. Also unlike Halo 3, you do not need to press the D-pad when trying to speak. Most of the playlists give you a HUD with a radar, experience bar, and weapon info. But there is also hardcore playlists where you receive no HUD giving it a more realistic feel.

All though there aren’t any online achievements to get there are still many online challenges. These challenges give you experience points and unlock new weapon attachments and camouflage styles. Some of these challenges are completed by getting a certain number of kills or headshots with a certain gun. Other challenges can include: cooking a grenade and killing someone with it, running 26 miles, or even jumping from a large distance and killing yourself. The challenges are fairly unique and quite fun to get. Based on the game type you receive experience points for kills and completing objectives.

Parties can be made and be used to enter Call of Duty 4 matchmaking together. You can create your own custom classes and customize the weapon, the add-ons, the camo type, type of special grenade and your special perks; all of this is used based on your chosen strategy. As yougain experience points you are awarded medals and levels. The levels also unlock new perks, challenges and weapons.

Custom games in Call of Duty 4, however, aren’t really as amazing. There is minimal customization in it. There also is no online co-op which is sad and you can’t bring guests into matchmaking which is also a downside. Overall the gameplay is amazing and will satisfy a lot of people. But if your more of a Halo or Unreal Tournament gamer you might want to rent it to see if Call of Duty 4 suits your style or not. Also spawn points cause some issues in multiplayer because it spawns you where all of your teammates are (commonly in the middle of combat) so you sometimes end up spawning and dying. But multiplayer really is the gem of this game.

Visuals - 10

Call of Duty 4 has the most amazing graphics on the 360 by far. They are very realistic and the game has amazing physics. The character animations are very well done and the flame animations are amazing as well. Bullet holes and collision detection is very well done. The shading is beautiful and I enjoyed not having over-brightened and over-contrasted lighting effects in this game. It is clearly the most realistic graphics out there for the 360. The water reflections are great but not as realistic as some other games. There are ads and graffiti on the walls which look fairly realistic. However, with the Arabic they made a mistake by not making the letters touch. The camouflage is well presented, especially for the marine snipers. The facial expressions could have been improved but they still look good.

Sound - 8

The gun shots and the sound of the explosions are perfect. Call of Duty 4's campaign has amazing voice acting as well. However, constantly hearing the same things ("Planting Claymore!", "Cover me, I’m reloading!", "Changing Mags", "GRENADE!"...etc) in multiplayer gets a bit annoying. The music is nice and suits the game play. The voices are a bit stereotypical but not overdone. Also, realistic sounds of people walking and of course dying. I would have enjoyed better voice acting in the multiplayer.

Longevity - 9 (High)

The campaign is roughly 10-15 hours long on Recruit but you will definitely want to play it again on Veteran which will kill another 20-25 hours. Infinity Ward also added an "arcade mode" that is unlocked when you finish the campaign. Similarly to Halo 3's "meta-game", you score points for skillful kills and finishing a level quickly. That’s just single player. The multiplayer is so much fun you will want to play it over and over again. You receive the pride of accomplishment when you level up or complete a challenge. The ranks and challenges help you keep wanting to play the game more. So Call of Duty 4 will last for quite some time. However, be warned that though the gameplay does differ at times, its often repetitive so over playing it might want to make you play another game.

Learning Curve - 9 (Easy, however you will need good reflexes)

Call of Duty 4 is fairly easy to learn how to play (especially for FPS fans), plus the basic controls and the objectives are clear. You can easily pick up and play. However what you must get used to is how quickly you can die. To get good, practice is required as well as fast reflexes. You have to learn the different parts of each map and create your own classes and strategies based on the map and game type. For example, when playing on a small map its better to be using a SMG or LMG and have the martydom perk.

Overall Call of Duty 4 is a fun game; for the people who like first-person shooters but don't like Halo-style or Unreal Tournament-style games this is definitely worth it. It has an amazing campaign but multiplayer is what people will enjoy the most. With multiple difficulty levels and an arcade mode, Infinity Ward has built a really good amount of replay-ability into the campaign. Fans of the Call of Duty series will love it. It’s also good to see that games are finally leaving the WW II era. If you’re looking for a great shooter, I definitely recommend getting Call of Duty 4.

Overall Score - 9.0

First off I would like to

First off I would like to say....First Post!

Now to the review. I think it was a very good review, and I agree with all the points that you made. The sound is amazing, the graphics are stunning, the campaign is easy. And yes I do mean on Veteran. If anyone here has beat COD2 on Veteran, they will realize very quickly that COD4's campaign is not all that hard. The multiplayer is phenomenal, and I have found a new passionate love for a gun in a video game, that is not the BR. I mean the M16. The M16 is amazing, if it is used correctly, it can get you out of any combat situation. The voices in Multiplayer do get repetitive, however they are not that bad. (Does anyone remember Shadowrun...."I'm Bleeeedddding OOUUTT!)The multiplayer over XBL is really solid, but the fact that people like to quit when they are host gets really annoying. I didn't really care for any of the old COD maps, but COD4's multiplayer maps are amazing. I love Crossfire to death, and Shipment is insane when playing with more than 2 people. I like how you are awarded for killing streaks by getting to call in air-strikes and choppers. The only thing that stinks about that, is if you go on long killing streaks. I went on a 23 kill streak the other day, and after you call in the helicopter, you get nothing else. It's almost more important to die, than stay alive. I wish that the local multiplayer worked like it does online. Over XBL 3 kills is a UAV (radar), 5 kills is an air strike, and 7 kills is a helicopter. When you play local, you are automatically given permanent radar, and it only takes 3 kills to call in an air strike, and 5 kills to use a chopper. Plus you aren't able to even use the create-a-class. The create-a-class is amazing, and adds alot to combat tactics. some people may have more heath, some may have RPG's. It's ever-changing. In local, you have to use default classes. I like to use one with martyrdom, so that when I die, usually my foe walks over my grenade, giving me an easy +10. If you don't have XBL, rent this game. If you do have XBL, you better buy it this holiday season, b/c you have no idea what your missing out on. It's definetly a great game to add to your FPS collection.

Actually i would have to

Actually i would have to disagree with Anorexic. The campaign of this game is far more difficult then COD2 on veteran. Ive beaten both, and COD4 has the one mission that is called "No fighting in the Warroom", with the 9 minute timer. That is a difficult mission, and the checkpoints don't always work on that mission making it more difficult if you are unlucky.

Other then that, this game is the next Rainbow Six 3... You won't see that though till you make it up there in the levels though, and get past the learning curve.

~Warhero89~

Anorexic Leader's picture

Well I do agree on "No

Well I do agree on "No Fighting in the War Room" being a pain. I give you that Warhero... That mission took me the longest to beat. Other than that, I can remember countless times of being shot, and dropping to prone in COD2 to avoid dying. Whereas in COD4, I've been hit practically point blank with an RPG, and still managed to survive. At least we don't have to hear our allies shouting Panzerschreck!!!! That was always so annoying in the old COD games. And RPG is alot shorter to say...lol. And if you were wondering as to why I have little or no GS in COD4, it's because I beat it on a friends 360, seeing as how my 360 is still not back from repair.

Great job on the review! I

Great job on the review! I think COD4 is an *awesome* game that I will be playing for at least a year but I still have some major qualms:

1) Enemy spawning in campaign is exactly the same every time.
2) Enemy AI behaviors are pretty much always the same.
3) Checkpoint system is really strange. It's painful trying to figure out why if you go to the next building on your side of the street, you don't get a checkpoint but if you cross the street to the building across from you, you do get a checkpoint. I found myself going to rooms or buildings I didn't really want to just to get a checkpoint. Veteran may be hard but if you memorize the checkpoints, it gets easier. It's a bit lame that as soon as you get to a certain room, the infinite stream of enemies suddenly stops.
4) No online achievements. I don't mean the scary kind like in COD3, I mean:
- Get to Rank 12 in multiplayer (10 points)
- Become a level 3 expert with any weapon (10 points)
- Call in a chopper (5 points)
It's not that hard to figure these out, IW.
5) Online games can't continue when the host leaves. (Usually resulting in a loss for the non-host team)

There's probably more but even these don't outweigh the fun that COD4 is.

Anorexic Leader's picture

Yea ChuckieJ is totally

Yea ChuckieJ is totally right about the checkpoints. In one level I went through 3 houses, and made it practically all the way to the other side of the level, and I didn't ever get a checkpoint. When I watched my friend play it on normal, he got a checkpoint for each house he went in. I would make it through the houses, but not kill that one last guy, so it never gave me the checkpoint. Talk about annoying. I eventually got it, but still that just makes it a real pain. I mean I was covering the exact same ground as my friend, but not fully clearing the house. I found one enemy just standing in an open closet. He didn't even try to fire at me....the AI is pretty predictable at times, but for the most part just really funny to watch as they get mowed down.

Awesome review bro, but ive

Awesome review bro, but ive got one question and it something you didnt cover. What i want to know is there levels like in Halo3 and also a ranking system like COD3/H3. Becuase as you might of remembered in COD3 you would get a new rank for each map, starting out as a private or something. So Im wondering if its still the same, You get your rank during the game and it starts new from private with every new game you start. But awesome review, it helped alot with the decision to buy the game or not...

Anorexic Leader's picture

There is a ranking system,

There is a ranking system, but it's not really true skill like Halo. You get a number, 1-55 I think, but the number doesn't really mean much. All the number means is what you have unlocked, and what skills and weapons you can use. (i.e. you must be a level 49 to use the P90 gun.) Also if you lose a match, you don't go down in rank. You can only go up...which is good. However, that takes away from actually trying to reach a high level, over than just messing a round and still ranking up. When you reach level 55, you are able to replay in "Prestige" mode. This will bring you back down to level one, but you will get a really neat symbol rather than being a private again. Once you rank back up to level 55, you can do it all over again. I haven't personally done it, so I'm not sure if you lose all your weapons and abilities, but I think you will. (To make it harder each time) You can enter prestige mode 10 times, so basically that means there are 550 levels. There are no online achievements, but if you complete challenges, you will rank up faster. (challenges are basically achievements; i.e. kill a person with a grenade) This can be beneficial to acquiring new equipment to use. You have to be a high level to use a perk to where you can carry two primary weapons. I want this one so bad, that way I can carry the M16 and The P90. B/c M16 is just awesome, and the P90 owns the shotgun at close range. I know it's sad, but it's true. If you can use it well, the shotgun will do nothing. Once I get my 360 back, and actually buy COD4, I'll be online alot.

I have to agree with

I have to agree with Anorexic here. I find the campaign to be somewhat easy so far. This was my first time playing a Call of Duty game so I started the game on Recruit. In the first two levels, again never playing a COD game, I didn't die once. So...as I wasn't too far into the game I started over on Hardened. Again, I played through the first two levels and died just a handful of times. Each time after dying, however, I would get through the following checkpoint without dying again. So I tried the Veteran setting and that's where I started to feel the challenge. I hate to compare the two games because I'm sure to get flamed as being a Halo fanboy (well not so much her, I guess we're all fanboys here) but I would equate Veteran to Heroic on Halo 3. I haven't hit this War Room section yet but that seems like the Tsavo Highway on Legendary I'm looking for.

P.S. This game is still a 10 out of 10 for me.

Anorexic Leader's picture

I'm glad you agree with me.

I'm glad you agree with me. But...Legendary Halo 3 is far easier than COD4. COD is still a game that is all in its own class, and should not be compared to Halo. However seeing as how I've been playing Halo since it came out, COD games seem to be harder to me than Halo 3. If you want a real challenge play some Halo 1 on Legendary. That took me forever to beat.

I mean I can remember beating Halo 2 on Legendary, and immediately tried playing Halo 1 to see which one was harder. Lets just say I died...fast! Halo 3 is appealing to such a larger audience, that Bungie had to make it easier to bring in new fans. COD 2 and Halo 1 on the Veteran/Legendary difficulty are definitely the hardest games of both franchises. Trust me...

Kickimanjaro's picture

Great review! This game is

Great review! This game is awosomeness! I'm playing it more than Halo...but I don't get why people say it's the hardest shooter or whatever on veteran! Halo 3 is soooo much harder (Solo) on Legendary. Maybe it's just how I play...I take cover a lot! ...meh

Anorexic Leader's picture

You have a point, cover is

You have a point, cover is key. But your shields recharge pretty fast in Halo, and there also isn't the really annoying red screen that completely screws up your view. It's really annoying when your about to die, and you get all tunnel visioned in COD. Nothing like that happens in Halo. It blinks red, but it's not annoying. And yes I meant solo Legendary, not Co-op. I'm pretty run and gun in Halo, but COD you can't move so quickly or your gonna die. You have to press forward, or the enemies will just keep coming. As soon as you reach the checkpoint it will either be over, or the next wave will come. In halo, what you see on screen is how many enemies you will have to kill. Once all the covenant are gone, thats it. However, the flood spores can re-inhabit the bodies of dead flood, but for the most part you can tell which ones are gonna come back to life. Basically in Halo it appears that their is a set number of enemies. But in COD if you stay in one spot, the enemies will keep pouring in from all sides, causing you to more than likely die.

Virgoblu's picture

I agree Kick. Halo 3

I agree Kick. Halo 3 Legendary vs. COD4 on Veteren. Legendary wins hands down in difficulty. I use cover a lot too. Shoot everything until the bullets stop flying then move up. Get shot duck behind something until you replenish your strength. In COD4 the enemy doesn't come after me as relentlessly as the Flood on Legendary. The enemy AI seems to sit back/turn their attention to other Marines until I replenish my energy. On Legendary you actually have to run backwards to get enough time to recharge. And don't get me started on those Jackel snipers! As for class of it's own, I don't know about that. Comparing a shooter to another shooter for reference shouldn't be frowned upon if it conveys your opinion in terms the reader can understand. The most common point of reference for other shooters, especially here, is Halo 3. Wouldn't you think?

Anorexic Leader's picture

Okay, I'm sorry, but come

Okay, I'm sorry, but come on. Grunts and Brutes throw grenades at you, but they don't bounce around corners, and flash bang you at random. Even with skulls turned on, the covenant will never throw grenades that well. You also don't have loads of fully armed enemies with machine guns running at you in Halo. There is no easy class of enemies. Like in Halo you have grunts, and jackals. But in COD everyone takes the same skill to kill. You can be shot at through walls, and theirs plenty of helicopters to keep you down in cover. You can sneak up on enemies pretty easy in Halo, but if you even peek around a corner they know your their most of the time. Also I would like to point out that the flood only make up one part of halo. Are you saying that the covenant brutes are not as relentless... This doesn't happen in COD, b/c all of the enemies are relentless. Comparing a shooter isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you do want to compare difficulty, trust me it's way harder to stay alive in COD than in Halo.

Virgoblu's picture

In terms of difficulty

In terms of difficulty overall and vs. Halo 3 Legendary I'm having a much easier time going through COD4 on Veteran. Playing solo Legendary, I'm still working on it. It's not that hard when I've played with other players but alone... a different story. I have to play it totally different than I would if I had back up. And, I'm sorry, with certain skulls on death by grenade is not what I'm concerned with. In COD4 when bombarded with grenades, funny enough that's when the enemy seems to back off and allow me to run and hide without shooting at me. The friendly AI in COD4 is much better than the AI in Halo 3. Several times I find that if I lay back and do nothing in COD4 eventually the friendly AI will take out the enemy AI or leave just a few for me to pick off before moving on to the next checkpoint. When I'm pinned down by a Wraith bombarding me with plasma bombs, 2 Brutes with Plasma Canons shooting at me at the same time, Brute jet packers above me with Carbines and all my friendly (but dumb) AI is dead that seems a little more difficult to get through. I guess I'm a much better COD player than I am a Halo player. One thing is for certain is that pretty much everyone in this thread agrees that the campaign on Veteran is easy I just happen to believe it's easier than Legendary. Well...me and Kick at least.

chuckiej's picture

The enemies in COD4 appear

The enemies in COD4 appear in the same few areas over and over again. AND
The enemies have a very limited set of behaviors. If you sit for a while on the streets of the War Pig level you will see guys appear in a building and run to the exact same spot where you just headshotted his dead friend. A guy will run over and replace the guy you just killed in the doorway. Sure they use cover and all but there are at most 5 or 6 enemy behaviors per building on that street. I feel like going into arcade mode and seeing how many kills I can rack up without moving.

They seem to have three modes:
1) The player is far away
2) The player is closing in
3) (Sometimes) Charge the player

The enemy AI in Halo 3 is almost like a real AI. The brutes seem to actually make decisions based on what you, the Marines and other Covenant do. Are they so smart that they are always hiding and sneaking around... no. But they do have the ability to change what they are doing.

Anorexic Leader's picture

Okay I think we can all

Okay I think we can all hopefully agree on a few things....

1. The enemy AI to some extent is dumb in COD (i.e. hiding in the same spot), but the friendly AI is superb. Whereas in Halo the Enemy AI is Smart (i.e. climbing objects) , and the friendly AI is stupid. However, it is easier to die in COD than it is in Halo. And you feel you have to do more work in Halo than you do in COD because of fewer friendly AI gunners.

2. In Halo you have a nice and handy life bar, that tells me when or when not to enter a fight. I don't know about you but in COD it's pretty hard to judge by the blood outlines on my screen, if I still have enough life to take out that one last guy, or if I should wait. Plus b/c of the screen being filled with blood, I can't fully see the guy I'm always trying to shoot. Especially if you are forced to move slow from a flash bang. I know when it's red I need to hit the deck or take cover, but it's not as simple to interpret as the blood meter in Gears of War was.

I personally still think that in COD "you" have to move forward to stop enemy invasions, making it hard to press further on the battlefield and reach checkpoints even with AI help. And in Halo there are less enemies to kill, but you must do it(for the most part) all alone. The only semi hard parts are the flood, and parts like you describes where you must take down tanks. All the other parts in Halo are pretty simple. In COD all parts are pretty challenging, and there are no real super easy parts. Every battle seems like it was an eternity, and you must work very hard to press forward for your objective.

I'm a really good Halo and COD player, and I love both franchises equally, however in my opinion COD4 Veteran still seems harder than Halo 3 Legendary.

Like I said before, Halo used to be hard. Halo 1 was a pain. And COD2 was alot harder than COD4. But Halo has become easier and easier to help draw in more casual gamers.

good review but the campaign

good review but the campaign is no where near 10-15 hours if someone is playing on easy. The campaign is shorter than even Gears which was shorter than Halo 3's.

I got through the SP one my first run in roughly 5 hours on regular difficulty.

Call of Duty 4 is an awesome game.

I like the campaign a lot and I like the multiplayer even better. The clan feature makes it very unique and being able to customize your weapons is very useful.

It is my favorite game out of the Call of Duty series and probably my third favorite game overall.

Great Campain mode, but

Great Campain mode, but multiplayer sucks when you get stuck with top players that own. My first game I was playn against Majors in team Deathmatch I had like 5 kills it sucked.
