Big Bang
Microwave radiation
Stephen Hawking "What I have done is to show that it is possible for the way the universe began to be determined by the laws of science. In that case, it would not be necessary to appeal to God to decide how the universe began. This doesn't prove that there is no God, only that God is not necessary."
What is he right about? What is he wrong about?
If we believe there is no God, our understanding of our place in the universe and our purpose will be very different from one who does believe in a personal deity.
Dawkins quote
What is the implication?
Does the Big Bang rule out the need for a God?
What is your understanding of the theory?
What aspects are accepted by the scientific community?
What aspects are still disputed?
Before Planck time, the laws of physics break down. 5.4 x 10-44 s Another kind of physics must have been acting at that time.
Gravity in particular would cease to operate so scientists coined the term quantum gravity but such a theory has so far escaped us.
Science is able to describe things but not explain them. Explanations involve why more than just descriptions. Theories that don't require explanations tend to be the ones accepted by science. That's why explanations like steady state cosmology were popular before 20th century evidence for the big bang was found.
Stead state cosmology has since been given up on. It was the theory that the universe was generating matter as space expanded such that it counterbalanced the expansion.
Nearly all cosmologists now believe the universe had a beginning.
Since the expansion of the universe is pretty much agreed upon, scientists who still won't allow for God look for other theories.
One physicist put forward an idea that the universe might have exploded like the big bang, slowed due to gravitation to a near stop, then a hypothetical "anti-gravity" would hold it there for some period, then it would be allowed to expand again. As evidence increased the believed age of the universe, this theory was discarded.
Colossians 1
16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Still one more is that the universe keeps having big bangs followed by big squeezes. It has its own flaws but even if true, it still doesn't answer the question of an ultimate cause, it just postpones it.
A little science fiction
In Show Me God, the author writes a short fictional story about an extraordinary astronomical phenomenon. As it is discovered, the scientists realized it was very similar to a television broadcast signal but was being generated form somewhere outside the solar system. First they tried the NTSC standard TV they had around and that didn't work. Converting to PAL did however.
The images that followed were shocking. They were lines of Hebrew text. The first line of which said "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Each day, a new page of text appeared from Genesis.
Some scientists said it was a hoax perpetrated by aliens. Jewish scholars pointed out that the text followed the order they were familiar with, not the order in the Christian Bible. Some were upset that the message was so religious (and not their religion) but for many, it prompted the ultimate Bible study.
The transmission ended with the end of the Old Testament. The world replied with "What does this mean? What do you expect us to do with this message?" In less than an hour, a new signal appeared - the New Testament in Greek. Christians argued about whether the text recieved supported their various positions. Many people decided to follow Jesus through this occurrence - but many also decided to use the "infinite monkeys typing on infinite typewriters" approach to say that this occurrence was bound to happen in one of the infinite alternate universes.
People claim "if only God would show himself" but the point is that just like not everyone believed when Jesus came, not everyone would believe if he reached out to us through a miraculous TV signal from a pulsar.

I have a question about the big bang therory. If there was nothing and then a bang that spread matter across the universe and that's what created stuff then how could there possibly be a bigbang when there is nothing to fuel this bang and nothing to blow up???
I find my self thinking that
I find my self thinking that many times my self also if the big bang created everything then what created the big bang. Thats right God also this is an opinion not a fact. The joke was I was argueing about this with a atheist and he said well how would you know. I responded Exactly.
but to ask more, what
but to ask more, what created god?
if matter had to be created, god would have to be too!
Agnostic FTW
i have veiws, and i see things both sides, but idk. good write up tho. very ..in depth.
God is the creator of the
God is the creator of the universe which consists of space and time. God therefore exists outside of space and time (nothing needs to have created Him and He does not consist of matter) Does that help?
eh not really. haha
eh not really.
haha
what are your views on the
what are your views on the age of the earth this has always bugged me because different Christian's think the earth is different ages, what do you think because at the bible study that I lead at my school I asked this, not really looking into what answers there could be, I received answers that ranged from 10,000 years to a few billion. I'm not sure what to think. I know that the bible doesn't talk about millions and billions of years but is it possible that the six days of creation were not days but could have spanned long periods of time. Or perhaps that there is periods of human population growth that is not explicit covered in the bible. These questions have always confused me. Do you have any answers? I also wanted to say great job on the final episode.
This is an issue but it
This is an issue but it doesn't hurt the Christian faith. If the universe is only 10000 years old we have a problem because there are stars more than 10000 light years away from us. I don't think God would allow that kind of disagreement. So, I don't think its only 10000 years.

To Facehead- I personally
To Facehead- I personally feel that no one created God, He has always been here.
To Oscar- Most Christians(i'm guessing) like me believe its been several thousand maybe 6,000 for the age of the earth. If each "day" of creation spanned many years that would have made Adam and Eve pretty old(day 6-7=many years?) , and I think it would have mentioned it in the Bible if that was true. Why would God try to confuse us? I personally believe that it took literally 6 days to make the earth. (It's GOD after all hehe)

I want to preface my
I want to preface my response with this: I am an Industrial Engineering major and I have an associates degree in physics. This does not mean that I know more than anyone it actually means that I just have a lot more questions. And, for me at least, the more I learned about how the universe works from the vastness of space to the minute inner workings of the atom the more my faith in God was strengthened. Science proves that God exists not the opposite. There are just too many things what work perfectly for it to be just luck or chance. It amazes me that if one minor thing changes inside of an electron then everything falls apart.
As for the big bang there is a long explanation but in the same way if one thing was different all there would be is floating rocks and nothing more not even stars. Since a ball of mass has no "luck" i would say that God put all of this into motion and set the rules at the same time. And i believe a miracle is God breaking his own rules to help. In the universe the one constant is light yes the E= mc^2 thing light is the "c" part. It is what everything is referenced off of and you know of course that Jesus is the Light of the Earth

The way I look at it is,
The way I look at it is, even if there was some kind of big bang that created everything, someone would've had to have created those materials and chemicals that combined to explode. At some point, a greater being would have to have set things in motion.
And about how old the earth is: Whose to say a day in God's eyes is what we define as a day on earth? Time is completely objective and manmade, just so people can know when things are happening. A day for us is the time it takes for the planet to rotate once. Even other planets have different length days, some (to my knowledge) even take a full one of our years to rotate once. Who knows what God's definition of a day is, or how long that would take. For him, everything is timeless, because he created it all and knows exactly what will happen and when.
Yes, we have made up most of
Yes, we have made up most of our units of time but I think physicists would say that time is a property of our universe (its 4-dimensional, the 3 for space plus time).
Thanks for your comments Juggler, good stuff.
