Best Singleplayer - Forza Motorsport 2
Shocked? Indeed, I plugged so many freakin' hours into FM2 as a single-player game alone. There's a whole boat-ton of races to do and even more to do beyond that, the least of which includes painting vehicular masterpieces using the FM2 graphics editor.
Best Multiplayer - Halo 3
No contest at all. Halo 3 easily takes the cake simply because there's so much to do. Forge. Custom games. Matchmaking. 4-player online co-op. It's all there. Halo 3 is the complete multiplayer package that the consoles have been desiring for what seems like forever.
Best game that no one remembers - Crackdown
At first, all the buzz was around the fact that if you got a specially-marked copy of the game, you could gain access into the Halo 3 Beta. As soon as it came out, that buzz faded away. Damn shame, because Crackdown was a brilliant, if not somewhat flawed, open-world action game.
Biggest letdown - Kane and Lynch: Dead Men
If I had to give a response, I'd choose this game. So much looked awesome about it, and then it kind of falls flat and turns out to be an average game.
Game that revolutionized the industry - Portal
I don't think Portal so much revolutionized the gaming industry. It did, however, give it the swift kick in the nuts it had been asking for. So much about Portal, from its thinking-man's take on puzzle games to its undeniably witty writing, was absent from most games in 2007.
Best Downloadable content - Rock Band
Say what you will, there is no denying that there's something for everyone when it comes to Rock Band's DLC library. From 30 Seconds to Mars and The All-American Rejects to Metallica, The Police, and Rush, you'd be hard-pressed to not find a song you couldn't help but like.
Best 360 Game of the Year - Halo 3
Is there really any contestant for this? Mass Effect may come close, but it sure as hell ain't close enough. Halo 3 was the megaton release the Xbox 360 had desperately needed - even more of a megaton than Gears of War was.
Best Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Network title - Every Extend Extra Extreme (E4)
E4 is an addictive little game. I find myself going back to it on a regular basis. Where else can you play a rhythm game to your own music (and Phase doesn't count)? That alone gives E4 the edge.
Best Wii Game of the Year - Super Mario Galaxy
Again, no shocker here. Galaxy has all the makings of a classic. This is a 3D Mario game at its absolute finest. Enough said.
Best PS3 Game of the Year - Motorstorm
This game came very close to being the Best Game No One Remembers. Motorstorm is a brilliant little racer and provided us with some of the first "OMG" moments in gaming. Who can't forget those awesome slow-motion crashes?
Best Handheld Game of the Year - Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
The tour-de-force of handheld RPGs returned this year with a vengeance. With Wi-Fi multiplayer, all sorts of new creatures, and some of the weirdest, if not funniest, villians the series has seen so far (WTF is up with Galactic?), Diamond and Pearl both turned out to be absolute powerhouses for the DS. Nothing on the PSP even comes close.
Best PC Game of the Year - Crysis
What else could possibly get it? Crysis' beyond stunning visuals and wide-open gameplay options make it an instantaneous lock for PC GotY.
Now, are you ready to be shocked?
Top three games of the Year:
3. Forza Motorsport 2
2. Halo 3
1. Rock Band
Never before have I played a game that got me so addicted and so into it than Rock Band did this year. When you're playing this with a few buddies, you feel like you're part of an actual band. You're all in it together. It's this very thing, along with one of the best setlists rhythm games has ever seen (next to GH3 - I'm sorry, but I'm a sucker for Dragonforce) that makes Rock Band my Game of the Year for 2007. It knocked Halo 3 out of the top spot at what seemed to be the very last moment in order to take the crown I believe it rightfully deserves.
